A Structured Approach To Developing Corporate Strategy

Market Mapping Tutorial
Step 2 - Create 'Nodes'

Nodes' are the junctions within a Market Map, typically representing a 'Channel to Market' for a product or a commodity. They can also represent the 'final destinations' within the Market Map (such as 'End Users'). Within Market Mapping Software V2, each Market Map can support an unlimited number of Nodes. Also note that there are no limits to the number of Nodes that can be linked to each Root or 'higher' Node in the sequence.

The 'Create Node' button.

To create a Node, click upon the ‘Create Node’ button (above) which is located on the Toolbar. Nodes appear on the map as white rectangles with red borders.

The 'Node' Data Editor

The 'Data' Button.

Data corresponding to each Node is edited within the 'Node' Data Editor. To display the ‘Node’ data editor, select the required Node (note that handles appear at the edges, corners and centre), and then click upon the ‘Data’ button (shown above) on the Toolbar.

The only data that can be edited within the 'Node' data editor is the Node Name, for example the name of a wholesaler. However, assuming the appropriate Links are in place, the following information is computed and also displayed within the ‘Node’ data editor:

  • Volume (grey calculated field): The total volume of produce / service handled by the Node.
  • Unit Value (£) (grey calculated field): The unit value of produce / service handled by the Node.
  • Total Value (£) (grey calculated field): The total value of produce / service handled by the Node.
Total Value = Volume x Unit Value (£).

The 'Node Properties' Dialogue

The 'Data' Button.

Properties of the Node are changed by means of the 'Node Properties' dialogue. To open the 'Node Properties' dialogue, select the required Node and click upon the 'Properties' button (shown above) on the toolbar. Properties such as shape, orientation, colour etc. can now be changed at will.

'SupplyMap' Example

The 'SupplyMap' example features eight Nodes, including two Builder's Merchants, one Contractor, two Builders and three End Users (Domestic, Private Sector and Public Sector Buildings respectively). Data utilised by the 'SupplyMap' example is shown in the table below.

  1. Create eight Nodes on the market map background.
  2. Add data to the Nodes from the table below. Note that the 'Volume', 'Unit Value (£)' and 'Total Value (£)' fields are calculated fields. As no data has yet been added to any Link, these fields will currently contain values of zero.
  3. Properties are dealt with in Step 5 below.
  4. You are now ready to proceed to the next step of the tutorial.
Node Name Volume Unit Value (£) Total Value (£)
Builder A 0.00 0.00 0.00
Builder B 0.00 0.00 0.00
Builder’s Merchant A 0.00 0.00 0.00
Builder’s Merchant B 0.00 0.00 0.00
Contractor A 0.00 0.00 0.00
Domestic Buildings 0.00 0.00 0.00
Private Sector Buildings 0.00 0.00 0.00
Public Sector Buildings 0.00 0.00 0.00
