Market Mapping Tutorial
Step 1 - Create 'Roots'
Start your Market Mapping exercise by creating 'Roots'. A Root could typically
represent the source of a product or a commodity, for example a manufacturer. Within
Market Mapping Software V2, each Market Map can support an
unlimited number of Roots.

To create a Root, click upon the ‘Create Root’ button (above) which is located on the Toolbar. Roots
appear on the map as a white rectangles with green borders.
|

The 'Root' Data Editor

Data corresponding to each Root is edited within the ‘Root’ data editor. To open the
‘Root’ data editor, select the required Root (note that handles appear at the edges, corners and
centre) and then click upon the ‘Data’ button (above) which is located on the Toolbar.
|
|
The structure and content of the 'Root' data editor will depend upon the type of
map being created. However, editable fields will typically include:
- Root Name: The name of the Root.
- Volume: The volume that the Root produces.
- Unit Value (£): The unit value of produce / service charged by the Root.
- The Total Value (£): The total value of produce / service supplied by the Root.
This is a computed field which can be overwritten within the ‘Root’ data editor.
Total Value = Volume x Unit Value.
|
The 'Root Properties' Dialogue

Properties of the Root are changed by means of the 'Root Properties' dialogue. To open the 'Root
Properties' dialogue, select the required Root and click upon the 'Properties' button (shown above)
on the toolbar.
Properties such as shape, orientation, colour etc. can now be changed at will.

'SupplyMap' Example
In the 'SupplyMap' example, two Roots represent two Bricks Manufacturers. Note that 'Volume',
'Unit Value (£)' and 'Total Value (£)' data differs in each case as Bricks Manufacturer B has
double the production capacity of Bricks Manufacturer A, and offers produce at lower factory
gate prices as shown in the table below.
- Create two Roots on the market map background, which should be blank.
- Add data to the Roots from the table below. Note that the 'Total Value (£)' field is a calculated field.
- Properties are dealt with in Step 5 below.
- You are now ready to proceed to the next step of the tutorial.
