A Structured Approach To Developing Corporate Strategy

Competitive Positioning and Strategy with CubIT V2
Tutorial Step 1 - Your Position

Consider your position in relation to the 'ideal' for three criteria, namely 'Market Presence', 'Competitiveness of Offer', and 'Resource'. Note, at this stage you are only interested in your position RELATIVE to the ideal - that is the ideal position in the market (given its position in the life cycle), ideal solution (in terms of meeting current customer expectations), and ideal situation with regards resource, given the requirements of growing the market, developing product etc.

As can be seen, the three criteria constitute the axes of the CubIT V2 cube. The further to the right, top, and front of the cube, the more competitive your offer. The eight points of the cube are defined below:

Name Presence Competitiveness Resource
Market Leader High High High
Tired Campaigner High High Low
Sleeping Giant High Low High
Easy Prey High Low Low
Strong Contender Low High High
Young Pretender Low High Low
Potential Entrant Low Low High
Weak Follower Low Low Low

A short set of instructions located in the grey shaded text area to the right of the CubIT V2 cube (titled 1. YOUR POSITION ...) advises you to move the cursor to the corner of the cube which best describes your position. Make sure that you move to the required CORNER of the cube framework! A green bubble will 'pop-up'. Note that the short instructions have now been replaced by a brief description of your position.

When you are satisfied that you have located the correct position for your company it should be 'fixed' by clicking once on the green bubble.

The description of your position now moves to the foot of the page, and the grey shaded text area (now titled 2. YOUR COMPETITOR'S POSITION ...) contains the second short set of instructions advising you to locate your competitor's position.
